Actually today my parent’s mark 25 years since they got married – Silver Anniversary they call it, right? Gosh, that’s such a commitment isn’t it?!
1.When did your journey as a designer begin?
Ever since I was a young girl I?d always give the same answer to the question ?What do you wanna become when you grow up?: ?A designer? I’d reply without any hesitation. For as long as I remember I’ve been keen on pulling off outfits and playing with my mom’s jewellery! And I’d get so incredibly excited every time I came across a sparkling little stone. My granny has also influenced my passion for fashion! She’s a sewer, and I used to spend countless of hours staying right beside her and paying close attention to the sewing process. So when I became mature enough to decide what I wanted to study – I just knew it – FASHION. So just like that I went to a Fashion School and after graduating I did my Bachelor and Master Degrees in Fashion too!
It all started as a joke around 5 years ago. I was crafting pieces for myself and then all my girlfriends wanted a necklace or two for them too. Soon after the friends of my friends started contacting me and ordering accessories too. I quickly found my niche as up until that point no one was offering that kind of accessories. People from all across the country began contacting me and it all got to the point of me constantly stumbling upon people wearing my pieces.
3.Where does your inspiration come from?
My signature jewelries are made with macramé, which I?d dye in hombre colours. My latest obsession is creating necklaces with chains and macramé, which are sewed and braided by hand. Also, I always make sure to create hip and unique packaging, inspired by the personalities of my clients: I?d always take into consideration their taste and character which to be honest, is where I derive most of my inspiration from. Also, I’d spend hours researching the traditions of different tribes and their national costumes and learning from them.
I’d certainly go back to the 1920?s. Aw? you know, attending events wearing the signature frock and frill embellished shift dresses and studded fringe flapper cocktail ones inspired by the Charleston dance; rocking the pearl and feather accessories and a chic wavy hairstyle. Actually, no wonder that the Great Getsby is my all-time favourite film as it perfectly showcases that magnificent era in all of its beauty and glamour.
Boutique Room 11 unites my brand Nikolett and ESSA TAU. We are only two designers now, offering a limited collection of clothes and jewellery. In future we?d like to represent and offer the work of other independent designers too. Ultimately, we’d like to establish a team so that our production process could be more efficient which would also help us expand abroad.
7.What advice would you give to the new designers who?re making the first step in the fashion industry?
